Sunday 21st: picked up by my host, Dave Berger and his son Kenneth at about 11 for a trip to the the Rietvlei Reserve , an enclosed reserve, about 10 Km outside Pretoria , which is excellent. We had our sandwiches at a picnic ground and saw all the usual large antelopes and various other goodies. Gave 65 spp. birds and 9 mammals including 3 lifers: South African (Cape) Shelduck, Melodious (Latakoo) Lark and Levaillant's (Tinkling) Cisticola, and one mammal: Common Duiker. Better for birds than when we visited it 9 years ago – then only 35 spp despite being much the same time of year. Highlight was probably 4 ostriches walking in line with the cars to cross a bridge.
